The Story of EDP Sailing Team

There’s something magical about being out on the water — the wind, the rhythm of the waves, the teamwork needed to harness nature’s forces. At EDP Sailing Team (Endeavour Sailing), students of Endeavour Primary School are discovering that magic — and, in the doing, building character, confidence, and a passion that could last a lifetime.

What is EDP Sailing?

EDP Sailing (Endeavour Sailing Team) is the official sailing CCA (Co-Curricular Activity) of Endeavour Primary School.

As the school’s sailing arm, EDP offers students from Primary 4 to 6 — with exposure for Primary 3s — the chance to learn sailing fundamentals, practice together, and compete in school-level and national interschool competitions.

Their mission goes beyond the sport itself: “Sailing Towards Excellence, Anchored in Character.”

The Philosophy & Benefits

EDP Sailing is grounded in a holistic philosophy. Some of the core aims & benefits include:

  • Character & values development — Beyond the technical skills, sailing teaches perseverance, responsibility, teamwork, and resilience.

  • Physical & cognitive growth — Sailing engages both body and mind: balance, strength, coordination, and also decision-making, anticipation, and strategy.

  • Confidence & grit — Each time a student boards a boat, faces shifting winds or capsizes, they learn to adapt, steady themselves, and try again.

  • Teamwork & communication — Sailing is hardly ever done solo. Even in small dinghies, coordination, clear communication, and trust are crucial.

  • Connection with nature — The water, wind, weather: students learn to read the environment, appreciate it, and respect it.

Program Structure & Training

Here’s how EDP Sailing runs its programme:

  1. Meeting & TransportStudents gather after lunch at school and board a bus to the SAF Yacht Club for training.

  2. Training SessionsA training day might include:

    • Physical fitness / warmups

    • Sailing fundamentals (rigging, wind/boat handling)

    • Short races or drills

    • Reflection & debrief, safety routines

    • Sessions typically conclude by 5 pm.

  3. Progression Pathway

    • Get Kids Afloat (GKA): Introductory programme providing foundational boat handling skills.

    • Opti Sailor: Basic boat control, right-of-way, collision avoidance, confidence building.

    • Opti Racer / Racing Track: For those who want to compete — sharpening technical skills, learning race tactics.

    • High Performance Training: National Squad, Elite development, strategy, physical conditioning, and mental toughness.

Milestones & Highlights

EDP Sailing doesn’t just train — they compete, earn recognition, and build memories:

  • National School Games (NSG 2025)In 2025, EDP sailors proudly represented Endeavour Primary at the NSG. They embodied sporting spirit, resilience, and excellence.

  • CCA Experience 2025To spark interest among younger students, the Sailing CCA was showcased to incoming Primary 3s. Existing members put up displays, sharing how the club works, their achievements, and inviting the next batch of sailors to join.

  • Gallery & MemoriesThe team captures moments through the years — races, training days, laughter, struggles, and milestones.

  • Alumni & Journey StoriesFrom first steps on the water to advanced classes, many sailors’ journeys are documented and celebrated.

The Coach: Coach Low

A key pillar behind EDP’s success is Coach Low, the sailing coach of Endeavour Primary School.

  • Known for patience, encouragement, and thoughtful planning

  • Emphasizes both skills and character growth in students

  • Creates a safe environment where students can push themselves while learning from mistakes

Challenges:

  • Logistics & access: Boats, water access, storage, maintenance, and transport

  • Weather & natural constraints: Managing training schedules amid unpredictable conditions

  • Sustaining interest: Retaining committed sailors while balancing other interests
